A woman, Eluronke, has told a Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, that her husband, Ayomipo, regularly beat her when drunk, including a prolonged fight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

A Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has adjourned a divorce suit filed by a woman, Eluronke, against her husband, Ayomipo, whom she accused of drunkenness and domestic violence.

Eluronke told the court that Ayomipo constantly embarrassed her throughout their marriage. She said he drank excessively on a daily basis until intoxicated, and would justify his drinking by claiming it helped him sleep and prevented overthinking and depression.

Contrary to his claims, she said he became violent and unruly when drunk. She stated that she and her husband were often perceived as nuisances by co-tenants and neighbours due to frequent altercations instigated by Ayomipo, particularly at night.

On one occasion, she said, Ayomipo returned home intoxicated and engaged in a prolonged fight with her from about 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following day. Following that incident, she moved out of the matrimonial home.

However, she alleged that the separation did not bring peace, as Ayomipo continued to harass her by visiting her new residence to cause disturbances, engage in fights, and publicly embarrass her. Eluronke urged the court to grant her custody of their only child.
